Work out the numbers
Invoice for
- You receive
- Withheld and paid to the tax authority
Invoice amount = amount you want to receive ÷ (1 − withholding tax rate). Check that your contract allows you to gross up.
Short by
- You received
- Unexplained shortfall
What to do next
- Ask your customer for the withholding tax certificate or receipt. You’ll usually need it to claim a credit at home.
- Check the rate against the tax treaty between your two countries. If too much was withheld, you may be able to reclaim the difference.
- Ask your tax adviser whether you can claim a credit against your tax at home, and how much.
- For future invoices, before you quote.

Gross up a payment works out what to invoice so you still receive your full fee after withholding tax. Invoice amount = amount you want to receive ÷ (1 − withholding tax rate). Check that your contract allows you to gross up.
Check a payment I received compares what arrived with what you invoiced. It shows whether the shortfall matches a common withholding tax rate, or is more likely to be bank charges or an exchange rate difference.
